Christian Counseling

At NPS, we serve all faiths and are inclusive of all people groups, secular or religious. At times though, we get referrals from those who are expressing that they want a specific perspective from their Christian faith.
Christian counseling is similar to secular counseling in many ways. Both are motivated by a desire to help you overcome your difficulties, find meaning and joy, and become emotionally and mentally healthy so that you can live your best and fullest life.

Faith based counseling is distinct in that it also incorporates the spiritual dimension into healing and growth. Depending on your type of faith background or interest, a Christian counselor may integrate biblical principles when working through an issue, or may suggest a spiritual discipline as part of your personal healing plan. For many clients seeking a Christian counselor, having their faith central to the counseling is of highest importance.

What Christian counseling should not be is forceful, evangelistic, heavy-handed, or out of balance with other dimensions of health (chemical, physical, psychological, etc.). A professional Christian counselor should not present a simplistic, legalistic approach to healing or gloss over complex situations with absolutes.

A good counseling experience should always feel safe and non-judgmental and be especially marked by grace. Many times, a counseling session is the first place that someone takes the risk to share openly what they struggle with. Knowing that confidentiality is one of the highest principles in counseling, at NPS, we create a safe place to talk and work through some of the most sensitive circumstances in our clients’ lives.

Premarital Christian Counseling

Faith based couples understand the importance of starting off with a good foundation.  At NPS, we offer a unique blend of scriptural principles and psychological mindset to help keep a balance for the mind, body, spirit aspect of a marriage.

We believe every person’s story is sacred and that beauty can always come from ashes.

One of the ideas that we reject at NPS is the idea that if a person would only be “more spiritual” or “more obedient,” everything would be better. We believe that God works through painful seasons and personal challenges to bring us to deeper places of wholeness. We believe every person’s story is sacred and that beauty can always come from ashes.

At NPS, we understand that each client brings a unique value system and perspective, and we do not seek to inject our personal beliefs into the counseling process. But for the client who is interested in the concept of spiritual integration, the counselors at NPS can provide a kind of care that secular counselors would likely not.

Some of the verses that most resonate with our philosophy of counseling include:

  • John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
  • Isaiah 43:1–4: “ Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”
  • Romans 8:37: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Our offices are filled with stories of redemption, grace, healing, and restored lives. We believe that’s absolutely possible for you. Whether you’re looking for Christian marriage counseling, Christian family counseling, or simply a qualified professional counselor, we encourage you to take that first step and schedule a consultation.

More On Christian Marriage Counseling

Our counselors are qualified to provide excellent care for your marriage, regardless of your spiritual bent. But if you and/or your spouse are Christians, and you’re looking for a counseling process that will honor our spiritual foundations, you’ve come to the right place.

A good Christian marriage counseling experience will draw on foundations from scripture without dogmatically imposing a particular interpretation of scripture. We understand that the Bible’s teachings on marriage are complex and sometimes difficult to understand, and we never paint with broad brushes. But we also believe that the Bible offers some of the most life-giving, freeing, and effective approaches to healing and building relationships.

Whether your marriage is in crisis or you simply want to work on building a stronger relationship (or anything in between), we can help. Read more about our counselors or call 815-477-4727 to make an appointment.
