ADHD
What is it?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a brain-based condition that leads to distraction, impulsivity and can disrupt a person’s ability to emotionally self-regulate.
3 Reasons Why It Matters
-
ADHD is highly misunderstood as only an inattention issue. Actually, people with ADHD can highly attend if something is very interesting to them. That is because their brain responds to high arousal and stimulation.
-
Many bright, talented and gifted people with ADHD struggle to achieve their professional or personal dreams in spite of feeling inspired and desire to be dedicated. ADHD can disrupt the part of the brain that helps us make a plan, execute it, follow through and make changes along the way to reach the goal. Procrastination is a big killer of moving forward in life.
-
Adults with ADHD often struggle with a range of intense emotions. Flash emotions, or rapid shifts in mood, can lead to impulsive reactions, low frustration tolerance can be misunderstood as a personality problem, but in actuality is a brain-based feature of ADHD. Rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) can also show up for many people with ADHD. Sensitivity to even mild criticism, perceived rejection, or honest feedback is heightened, leading to feelings of hopelessness, demoralization, intense shame or guilt which can feel paralyzing.
