Justin is a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving 5 years as a Hospital Corpsman with a specialty training as a Behavioral Health Technician. During his time in the armed service, he assisted in providing mental health care to active duty servicemembers experiencing life crisis, post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries.
Justin completed his Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling from Northwestern University after his term of service, bringing 13 years of varied experience in the field of mental health into his work with clients seeking individual counseling.
There are so many things that we are taught to do in life: math, reading, paying bills, driving a car – but it is striking to think that for many of us, no one teaches us how to deal with life’s stress, maintain healthy relationships or take care of our mental health in the same way one might take care of their physical health. Therapy is one way to help turn processes of trial-and-error into a conscious path to arrive at a place in life we can feel content with.
The truth is that no one can make it through life on their own. While being nervous or anxious about starting a new course of therapy is totally natural, my goal is to help make the process of settling into counseling as smooth and pleasant as possible.
Justin’s philosophy on the nature of counseling and the client-counselor relationship is best summarized in metaphor: Your journey through life is a road-trip – and you’re driving the car. As a counselor, Justin likes to think of his role as being your GPS; you have an idea of where you would like to go and a counselor helps you identify routes to get there, be on the lookout for detours or road hazards -and- be there with you on the road.
