Lara completed her undergraduate studies in psychology and sociology at the University of Kentucky. After a long tenure in healthcare compliance and technology, Lara decided to return to her dream of helping others. She completed her master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling at Northern Illinois University and specializes in working with individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions to navigate life’s challenges. Lara has experience in both a private practice and an academic mental health counseling setting working with teens and adults of all ages, from different backgrounds.
Lara has worked with individuals from different parts of the world and understands each of us has a unique lived experience that informs how we function in life. Multiple layers of complexity in our human experiences such as anxiety, depression, work stress, life transitions, disability and medical diagnoses can make life difficult to navigate. These complexities can impact our ability to function. Lara believes therapy can help each individual find the right tools to cope with these challenges and improve daily life.
Lara approaches counseling with compassion, empathy, non-judgement and respect for the client and their individual experience. She loves learning and understanding a client’s story and believes this is crucial in the therapeutic process to help a client feel valued, seen and heard, resulting in a safe therapeutic space.
Lara believes building rapport with the client is the foundation of the counseling relationship. Establishing rapport supports other important components such as trust, honesty and transparency. Together, these serve as building blocks to provide a safe, secure, and peaceful environment for clients to explore their concerns.
